“ 「愛国」の度合いが進むにつれて、愛国者は同国人に対する憎しみを亢進させ、やがてその発言のほとんどが同国人に対する罵倒で構成されるようになり、その政治的情熱のほとんどすべてを同国人を処罰し、排除することに傾注するようになる。
歴史が教えてくれるのは、「愛国者が増えすぎると国が滅びる」という逆説である。
